Day 29

My foot feels good as new! It hurt this morning, but after lunch I didn't even notice it anymore. I went to training and worked on Jiu-Jitsu with Jason Manly and Boxing with Danny Perez.

In Jiu-Jitsu we worked on this sweep from half-guard which took a little getting used to and I know I still don't have it down, but it's starting to come together. When it came time to roll, I was put in a group with all veterans. I know that the two of them were blue belts, and I'm not sure about the other, but I remember he was way better than me when I started and has only improved since then. I felt that I was okay moving around, I was able to re-establish position okay, but I did get submitted a few times. We did 3 10 minute rounds with each person.

In Boxing we worked on some cardio and drilled some combos. I still think that my striking is my main strength. I need to work on my defense and movement. Something I think will only come in time with more sparring.

Today I ate:

Granola with Almond Milk and Sliced Banana
2 Eggs Over Easy, 2 Bacon
Chicken Stir-Fry
Bacon-Wrapped Chicken with Basil and a side of mixed vegetables

Monday, January 30, 2012

Day 28

I got my foot checked out, and the doctor says that I have a mild strain in my right foot. The only thing I can do is Rest, Ice, Compress, and Elevate and it'll get better in time. I'm going in to work tomorrow, but the way my foot feels, it doesn't seem like I'll be able to do any running anytime soon. We'll see what I can do. I'll talk to my coaches and let them know about my injury and see what I can do.

Day 27

The meet up was fun. I was able to grapple with a guy from ACE and a guy from OC Jiu-Jitsu. I taught two guys how to do triangles, armbars, and kimuras which is always fun too. I got in the ring and sparred some stand up too. I got to work on some of my boxing.

This morning though, I woke up to go to the bathroom. As I was getting out of bed I felt a pop and snap in my right foot. (Yeah yeah, all I needed was some crackle) Now I feel constant pain there and it gets even worse when I put any weight on it. I hope this is nothing and I can just take some ibuprofen until it goes away. I can't miss work and I can't miss training. I'm hungry right now, but I was supposed to get a blood test two weeks ago, so I might as well use part of today to get my blood test since I won't be able to go into work for the first half of the day anyways. I scheduled a doctor's appointment today at 8:40. Wish me luck! Oh here are two videos of me sparring at the meet up.

Day 26

After Friday's Jits class we spoke with Rob Najar our other grappling coach, he told us that we need to rest up and ice because Saturday's class was going to be tough. Saturday came around and it turned out to be an hour and a half of Grappling and an hour to an hour and a half of conditioning. We worked on escaping from half guard and worked on a bunch of technique. Me noticing that I need to get my head closer to apply shoulder pressure helped out a lot as I was able to maintain side control a lot easier. I rolled with some great guys too. Shohei Yamamoto and Taison Naito, both champions in Kyokushin Karate are also pretty good grapplers. Last time I rolled with Shohei he butterfly swept me three times. This time I was able to defend them. They both still tapped me out, but I think I might have reached a new level. I then rolled with Dennis Palmer, it was his third class ever. So we rolled after I got a few submissions, I then spent some time going over some stuff like Anacondas and Darces vs. Guillotines and some other defense stuff. I was told by Luke Adams that teaching reinforces your learning and it really does, and when it comes down to it. Helping out your training partners is the right thing to do. In the end you get better training partners and you become better too. No accomplishment in being the best in the gym. I rolled with two other guys named Jon and John. I felt that I was able to move better with those two, but I wasn't able to submit them. I think Jon, got me in one, but I don't really remember.

Unofficial Conditioning Class took place maybe 10 - 15 minutes after class ended. We set up Clean
Power/Battling Ropes
Treadmill (Unpowered)
Medicine Ball
Kettlebells
Burn Machine
Sledghammer Slam

We did four 5 minute rounds 1 minute at each station with a 1 minute break in between rounds.
We finished the workout with ab work.

Today I'm going to the South Orange County Meet Up Group, they're meeting at:

Wardance Training Center
3198-C Airport Loop
Costa Mesa, CA 92626

I'll let you guys know how it goes unless of course you guys wanna come down. It's today at noon and there is going to be a 5 dollar mat fee.

Days 19-25

Okay, I fell of the wagon big time where I ate pretty much whatever I want and I ended up gaining three pounds. I also didn't train days 19-24. I slacked off big time in every way possible and I paid a price. The only thing I can do now is get back on it and work my ass off. I think a lot of it was that I just burned myself out. I was doing three a days and while I was starting to get used to it, the wake, work, train, school schedule was tough. I didn't really have time for anything else.

So I'm going to do a few changes. I'm going to do a modified diet where I will still eat a few breads, no more than four slices a day and zero will be the minimum. I'm still going to eat all organic meats, fruits, and vegetables. So I know it's not 100% Paleo, but I'm going to give it a shot.

Now for the days I actually did train.

On Friday, I did Jiu-Jitsu with Jason Manly and an Unofficial Conditioning Session with my buddy Mike Kruse.

In Jiu-Jitsu we worked a lot of half-guard stuff. We mainly drilled on getting shoulder pressure. I noticed during the drilling my partners were always able to get their forearms on my throat and it only hit me after the class was over that I need to close the space. It seemed really obvious after I had already been making the mistake. We then rolled for one 10 minute round and then one 5 minute round. The guy I rolled with for the 10 minute round took me in side control, but I managed to work to North South and managed to get a Darce. I really need to work on improving my position because I think that I was in a lot of bad positions, but I managed to get out of them. I want to be able to not be in those positions in the first place. The five minute round I got dominated by my friend Jon. He got me in all kinds of crazy positions.

The Cardio Session with Mike is an unofficial class, he and I just meet up to run through some conditioning. It's a great workout. We run 45 second stations for three minutes. Some stations include:

Turkish Get Ups
Kettle Bells
Sledghammer
Medicine Ball
Treadmill (Unpowered)
Clean and Jerk
Bear Crawls
Heavy Bag Kicks

So we did five rounds on four of these stations and finished off the session with ab work.

Day 17-18

On Wednesday I was lazy, I didn't really do anything but work. I think I'm still intimidated by the wrestling class because there aren't too many people my size. There is this one kid that's 17. No... I'm probably just making excuses. I really need to go.

Last night I did three classes. I did:

Cardio Boxing and Boxing with Danny Perez
Advanced Kickboxing with Raja Shippen

I have actually been doing more striking classes than grappling classes this week. It's kind of dumb if you think about it. I am doing a grappling tournament in less than two months so it should be the opposite. I was placed on the Muay Thai team at Reign though, so I felt an obligation to go to the Advanced Kickboxing class. Jiu-Jitsu though gets out at 7:15 and the Advanced Kickboxing class starts at 7. What I didn't know though was that the Jiu-Jitsu class pretty much ends at 7. Oh well, a new schedule takes into effect on Monday anyway, I'll get more into grappling then.

Let's see if I remember what I ate:

Wednesday:
Eggs and Cherry Tomatoes
Honey Roasted Cashews
Bison Chili
Chicken Skewers

Thursday
Smoothie
Fruit
Bison Chili
Chicken Skewers
Hard Boiled Eggs

Still feeling great! Weight down to 201!

Tuesday, January 17, 2012

Day 16

Work was as usual, pretty boring. Some people were frustrating. 4 o'clock couldn't come any faster. When it did I was off to Reign to try out the new boxing classes.

I did:

Cardio Boxing and Boxing with Danny Perez
Advanced Kickboxing with Raja Shippen

Both the Cardio Boxing and Boxing classes were fairly similar. There were more running and conditioning in the Cardio Boxing class. Then the Boxing class we focused more on technique with boxing drills and some conditioning as well.

Advanced Kickboxing we went through a drill with some elbows, then we jumped right into sparring. I sparred and I kicked people's butts, and got my butt kicked and it was loads of fun, but now I'm exhausted.

Good news, I'm now 202, so the weight is finally coming off. Second day of Paleo and I'm still feeling good. I feel a little tired from the classes, but I feel really good.

Today I ate:

A smoothie
Renergy Sandwich (With Red Leaf Lettuce instead of bread)
Paleo Tacos
Bison Chili
Three Hard Boiled Eggs washed down with Coconut Water.

Still a long way to go, but I think I can make it!

Monday, January 16, 2012

Day 15

It was tough to wake up this morning. I don't know if it was just because it was Monday, but I let my backup alarm wake me up. Work kind of dragged by and I think it was especially slow because I was looking forward to getting in there and training.

When I got to Reign I did three classes. I did:

Cardio Kickboxing and Muay Thai with Raja Shippen
Submission Wrestling with Brett Cooper

Cardio Kickboxing I think I did fairly well. We went through our normal routine which really gets the sweat going. I suck at the end with the planks and the side planks. Usually I keep slipping from the sweat. Gross, I know! Muay Thai we drilled some combos in a live drill. So it was like we were going to hit each other if we didn't block, but at the same time, we weren't sparring. I kept getting the combo confused when I was holding for my partner. That was a little frustrating and I felt kind of bad that I kept messing up.

Submission Wrestling was a new class. Brett Cooper taught the class and we went over Kneebars, VonFlue Choke, and a Darce from Side Control Bottom. I loved each of those moves. The VonFlue is one that I briefly learned, but not enough to really reinforce it. it was more of a "Watch out for this." type learning experience. This class though, we drilled it for about five minutes. I was even able to get the VonFlue and the Darce in on my partners. It's always a nice feeling when you learn a move that day in class, and are able to execute it live.

I'm officially convinced that the Elevation Training Band is just a placebo. I felt just as tired or energized with it on as I did without it on. I'm not going to wear it anymore because it's really just a piece of cheap jewelry. Maybe other people have a different opinion, but I don't feel a difference.

I also started my Paleo Diet today. Right now, the claims are true. I went through three classes at Reign, and I felt like I could still do one more to max out like I did on Thursday. Aside from being sore from my workout, I feel pretty damn good.

Today I ate:

Smoothie (Blueberries, Banana, Almond Milk, 2 Eggs)
Handful of Almonds
Bison Chili
Handful of Honey Cashews (The verdict of the Paleo-Friendliness is still out on this)
Garlic-Cumin Chicken Skewers with Quinoa and Broccoli
Three Hard Boiled Eggs

I ate eggs instead of protein powder, because I don't think that BSN Syntha-6 is Paleo.

Sunday, January 15, 2012

Day 14

I woke up this morning at around 7:30. Did some laundry, the dishes. I cooked my meals for the week and I was really just lazy today. I've been hooked on 30 Days, the Morgan Spurlock documentary series that is now canceled. I also went down to Carlsbad for my sister's birthday dinner at Fish House Vera Cruz.

Today I ate:

A Banana
Two Paleo Tacos
Calamari Strips
Oysters
Crab Cakes
California Striped Sea Bass with Cherry Tomatoes and Rice Pilaf

I know that it's not Paleo, and it's not vegetarian, but tomorrow I will go through my Paleo Diet and I think I'm gonna go at it pretty hard. This week I have

Breakfast Smoothies
Omelets
Renergy Breakfast Sandwich

Bison Chili
Paleo Tacos
Chicken Skewers

If I want any sort of dessert it will be a frozen banana that I've puree'd in a blender. It kind of hit me that I could probably make this sort of like the Gracie Diet. Hmmm, not sure if I want to do that. Last time I found it was too restrictive and I couldn't lose any weight. I'm supposed to cut down to 170 and the last thing I want to do is be called Jay "Big Mac" Roman.

Tomorrow's schedule:

Work
Cardio Kickboxing
Kickboxing
Submission Wrestling
Sleep

Saturday, January 14, 2012

Day 13

Today was pretty lax. I just stayed home and did homework. I realized I ate an apple this morning so I didn't get my blood test done for my baseline. I guess I'll go Friday morning. I cooked dinner for my fiancee and her family. Bacon Wrapped Sirloin with Potatoes Au Gratin and a Pear Walnut Salad. I was pretty happy with it. I watched some football and really enjoyed both games. The San Francisco/New Orleans game was amazing, going back and forth the whole way through. The Denver/New England game I enjoyed watching Denver fail. After football my fiancee and I went to Whole Foods to get my Paleo Diet ingredients. I ended up spending 150 bucks. Way too expensive. I need to do more research and learn how to make stuff that is Paleo on a budget. I want to be healthy, not broke!

Today I ate:

An Apple
A Breakfast Quesadilla
Oatmeal
Another Apple
Quinoa w/Egg and Tofu
Bacon-Wrapped Sirloin with Potatoes Au Gratin and a light Pear and Walnut Salad
A Vegan Samosa

I'm excited to took my Paleo food. I think it will be fun and I hope the food is delicious. I kinda wanna try what the coconut oil tastes like on its own. I'll find out tomorrow!

Oh and because I felt lazy, after putting away my groceries I hit up a treadmill and ran three miles. I'm soooo not a runner.

Oh and here's a sandwich that I think I'll modify to make Paleo. Instead of using wheat bread, I'm going to use Red Leaf Lettuce and make a lettuce wrap out of it.

Friday, January 13, 2012

Day 12

I skipped out on training at noon. I think it was probably the best thing for me today because I think I overtrained last night. So all I did was work conditioning and do the cardio kickboxing class.

I met up with Manny and Vance at 3:30PM and we worked a circuit including:

Getups with some kind of weighted bag
Kettlebell Swings
Some kind of thing with a 10 lbs and 15 lbs weight plate
Turkish Get Ups
Heavy Ropes
Versa Climber
Squeezing an MMA Grappling Bag
Medicine Ball Smashes
Some drill where we run around platforms
Heavy Bag Kicks

We did 5 3-minute rounds as well as a 1 round of jumping rope as a warm-up and then two laps around the heavy bag area as a cool down.

Cardio Kickboxing is always tough for me. We actually worked some combos which were pretty fun. I noticed that Vance's kicks have gotten way better than when he first started. Seriously, his kicks were pretty sad. Now they're actually pretty good. I spent 45 minutes after class eating my protein bar and just hanging out with the people in the gym. Today was actually fairly easy except that I always struggle in the Cardio Kickboxing class. I was also told that I can go to the Advanced Kickboxing class which they're starting to do beginning on Tuesday. There are actually three new classes including:

Boxing with Danny "Dynamite" Perez
Advanced Kickboxing with Raja Shippen
Submission Wrestling with Mark Munoz and some other Pro Fighters.

I'm actually pretty excited about the Submission Wrestling class. Most of the guys in the gym joined up because they are fans of Mark, and some of us were actually wanting more interaction with him. (He rarely teaches classes other than the Wrestling class) The fact that he's going to be teaching this class is really cool. I also wanted to try out Boxing when it was still taught by Abel Nunez, but I struggled to be able to make it to class on time because of work. That and I was a little intimidated. Advanced Kickboxing, I think I'll be able to still do it because there aren't any other classes at 7 on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I've kind of been avoiding kickboxing because of my preparation for Grappling X.

Today I ate:

Oatmeal with an egg white and a handful of berries.
Almonds and a Fuji Apple
Grilled Chicken and Kimchi for Lunch and Dinner
Builder's Bar (Cookies and Cream)

I'm craving pizza pretty bad, but I've been able to fight it off.

I also received my book in the mail today. I read the first chapter and so far it's a little background about the author and testimonials from people that tried the diet. Towards the back there's a 30-day Meal Plan. One thing that kind of troubles me is that there's something different to eat everyday. This isn't so bad, but it makes it hard to cook 21 different meals that might take 5 minutes to an hour to cook. I think I'm just going to use it as a reference and make up my own meals, but still follow the Paleo guidelines.

A friend of mine were talking about the Paleo Diet and I gave him this video to watch. Robb Wolf addresses some of the questions people have about the Paleo Diet. I'm really looking forward to starting this diet. Maybe I'll go grocery shopping tomorrow and start the diet early!

Day 11

Exhausted is an understatement of how I feel today. I couldn't sleep last night and ended up falling asleep around 12:30AM this morning. I woke up at 4 to get ready for work and left my place at 5:20-5:30ish. I worked from 6 - 10:30 and I had a doctor's appointment to discuss the results of my blood test a week before the holidays. More on that later. I got back to work at 12:30 and finished the workday until 4PM. I went straight to training and did Cardio Kickboxing at 5, Jiu-Jitsu at 6, and MMA at 7. Here's how stuff went down.

I got to the Cardio Kickboxing class with Raja Shippen and I was working harder than I usually do things. Last night while I was on the bench Luke gave me a pep talk that a lot of things were mental and I need to fight through it, so I did at the Cardio Kickboxing class. I was already pretty tired by the end of class.

When Jiu-Jitsu with Rob Najar started we worked on some more leg locks. This one specifically was the toe hold. It feels a little awkward, but I guess it'll come the more I practice kind of like how the triangles; I'm starting to feel more comfortable with triangles. I didn't even finish the warm up. My cardio is horrendous. I can kickbox for hours. I can probably grapple for hours too. Running and jumping around though, my cardio's not there yet. I could see my empty light flashing by the end of this class, but I thought about the video, you know the one that I posted before about how bad do you want it? I want that gold medal bad, and I know that I'm already hurt, I'm already tired, I might as well get a reward for it. And I pushed through and joined the MMA class.

Today's class was taught by Brett Cooper. We worked on a lot of wrestling off the wall. I was sluggish, but I ignored it and dragged myself through class. There was a guy that I met named Jussett, not sure on the spelling, he was my partner and he was a great partner. He wasn't tired, he pushed hard, and he was still really friendly and helpful when I did something wrong.

I was beat up and left in bad shape after each class, but one guy was with me the whole time and I give mad props to. Vance Swoboda is a warrior. He went through all the classes, he wanted to quit, but he wouldn't.

So now back to the doctor's office. I noticed that my Ferritin level was almost twice the maximum to be considered within the standard range. the standard range topped at 300 something and I was at 600 something. So, just so that I can ensure that I stay healthy, I booked an appointment to talk about the results and what I can do to make it better. I also took this opportunity to bring up the Paleo diet and he thinks that I'll be okay. He suggested I still drink milk for calcium, but I told him that the Paleo diet is against dairy and really only considers it if the dairy is from a grass fed cow. Then he suggested I could keep drinking my Almond Milk and take some calcium pills. He told me that my Ferritin levels can decrease with the more weight I lose, since according to Kaiser-Permanente, I am obese.

I ate:

Granola with Almond Milk
Breakfast Sandwich (English Muffin, Bacon, Eggs, Pepperjack Cheese)
El Pollo Loco Leg and Thigh Combo with Macaroni & Cheese and Spanish Rice with Corn Tortillas
1 "handful" of Almonds from the individual "Just a Handful" wrapped pack of Almonds from Trader Joe's
2 Scoops of BSN Syntha-6

I weigh an even 200. Oh and funny story. Tonight I was driving to a gas station. When I parked, I realized that I was nowhere near a gas station. I was at a donut shop and it's a good thing they were closed. Instead of getting gas, I just drove home, because I felt I probably shouldn't be driving if I thought a donut shop was a gas station.

Day 10

It was really hard for me to wake up this morning, but I knew that it would only be harder for me to get out of bed the longer I stayed in bed. So I rolled out of bed and immediately hit up my morning routine.

I was going to go to Bad Beat 4 because my friend Rachael Cummins was fighting, but her opponent dropped out. So I met up with Rachael to get my money back. Rachael is dating my old Jiu-Jitsu and MMA coach Luke Adams. Luke invited me to train with him and I figured why not, it's a free private lesson. We mostly worked on boxing and MMA. By the time I wrapped things up, I looked at my clothes and they were soaked in sweat. Luke used to work at Reign until he was let go, and I still consider him a friend so it was really nice to be able to hang out and train with him. We also lifted some weights too. I was able to keep up except for the bench press and the pull ups. I suck at those. I think I'll utilize my Iron Gym and do more push ups to get better at them. It's hard to work out at home though. Less motivation I think, either that or more distractions.

Today I ate:

Smoothie
Oatmeal with Blueberries and Egg Whites
Tofu Stir Fry
Builder's Bar (Chocolate Peanut Butter)
Two Tofurkey Sandwiches
1 Scoop of BSN Syntha-6

I've decided that I'm going to go on the Paleo Diet. I ordered The Paleo Solution by Robb Wolf. It should come in either this week or early next week, but I think I got the basics down. Just stay away from grains, dairy (unless it came from a cow that was grass fed), and legumes. I'll go grocery shopping this weekend and I'll start my diet on Monday. (Just to use up my current groceries)

Anyways, I'm at 204 at the time of this posting, 34 pounds to go. I felt pretty energized today, but that's due to me taking a pre-workout. I took BSN NO Xplode. Compared to MusclePharm's Assault, I think I like the NO Xplode more. It has a little bit of carbonation when mixed which I like. Assault tastes too chemical and too sweet for my liking.

Tuesday, January 10, 2012

Day 9

Work was long and boring. It was a grind just to get through it. Usually when this happens I feel drained. I think that since I've been going straight from work to Reign that it's been easier to get in there. There's no time inbetween where I end up convincing myself not to go.

I did the Cardio Kickboxing class with Raja Shippen and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with Rob Najar.

In Cardio Kickboxing, I sucked. I felt sluggish and tired the whole time and I didn't like how I felt at all. I forced myself through it, but I kept looking at the clock. I don't like doing that because I'm there to work not just to kill time. I'll do better...I guess on Thursday since I don't plan to do this class tomorrow.

BJJ, we drilled footlocks and I think it was partially aimed at me because Rob knows I plan to compete. Then again, I think I motivated some people to compete more. I know a bunch of guys are going to do the Subfighter MMA tournament. I'm starting to think maybe I should do that as well to gauge where I'm at. I had trouble with the drills, I think it might be getting used to the positioning and maybe some flexibility. We then rolled and all three guys I rolled with I think are better than me. This of course isn't a problem, that just means I have a better opportunity to learn. I think the guys I rolled with were some of the better guys in class too. It was great practice, but I will always wish that I could have done better.

I think I've decided that beginning Sunday I'm going to give the Paleo Diet a shot. I'll start the diet on Sunday so I can use up all my current groceries. I also ordered "The Paleo Solution: The Original Human Diet" by Robb Wolf. From what I understand is that it's good for those with gout, of course I have to watch certain things like how much asparagus I eat because of the purine content. Other Paleo people don't have to worry about things like that.

Today I ate:

Smoothie (Banana, Almond Milk, 2 Scoops of Syntha-6, and a handful of blueberries.)
Steel-Cut Oatmeal with Blueberries
White Chocolate and Macadamia Nut Cookie
Tofu Stir Fry
Fuji Apple
Quinoa Bowl (Trader Joe's Quinoa, an egg, and veggie crumbles.)
Builder's Bar (Chocolate)
Mini Bowl (Small Teriyaki Bowl) California Rolls, and Miso Soup.

I'm really tired. I wonder if the Elevation Training Band has anything to do with this!

Monday, January 9, 2012

Day 8

No Day 7 post because I didn't train and I ate my cheat meal of Chicken Curry Yakitori and some rolls.

Today I did the Cardio Kickboxing and Muay Thai with Raja Shippen, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with Brett Cooper.

In Cardio Kickboxing I pushed myself hard to get my reward. It was hard but I persevered and got through the class. In Muay Thai we sparred and I am sooooo bad at blocking. I can throw punches, I can throw kicks, but defending punches and kicks I get hit way too much. I think I need to spar more or try to set up a private to correct it, because I know I'm doing something wrong.

In BJJ, there were only three other guys and I really like it when class is small like that. You get a lot of individualized attention. Since Brett was subbing for Rob tonight, some of the moves we drilled were a bit different. Of course, I'm not one to turn down anyone willing to help me out, so I do the move his way. If I don't like it, I won't use it, but I'll for sure give it a try. I was able to get more submissions than I usually do and one of the guys that I've had lots of trouble with grappling-wise told me that I'm moving around a lot better.

I think something finally clicked. Before I was more reserved and didn't really want to try anything. Now I feel like I'm letting in some creativity and I'm going for things that we drilled and things are just clicking. It's feeling really good, despite the fact that I'm sure I'll end up feeling really sore tomorrow.

I started drinking green tea after every meal now. It's something I did during my first weight cut and I think it might help. I've been pretty frustrated that I haven't really been losing any weight. I wish I could just eat healthy, but I actually have to be careful even with food that's considered healthy. Today I ate:

Smoothie (2 Scoops Vanilla Syntha-6, Banana, Frozen Berries, and Almond Milk)
Steel Cut Oats w/an egg white and a handful of blueberries.
Spaghetti Squash with "Meat" Sauce
A Honeycrisp Apple
Tofu Stir Fry
Builder's Bar
1 Scoop of Vanilla Syntha-6

I'm actually craving a small glass of almond milk too, so I think I'll do that. My weight is at 205.7 right now. Hopefully it goes lower tomorrow so I can reach my goal of 170.

I also took off my Elevation Training Band today. I'm pretty convinced it's just a placebo because I don't notice much of a difference other than the fact that I got used to feeling it on my wrist.

Saturday, January 7, 2012

Day Six

Today I helped Rob Najar out with the Kids' Jiu-Jitsu class even though they probably know more than I do. I figured at least I could serve as a visual aide so Rob can demonstrate the technique. It was a mad house. Kids doing all kinds of things and there was this one dad that kept trying to get a private lesson for his son because it's his third class.

I worked on my BJJ from 10AM until around 12:30PM today. We worked on various ways to sink in an armbar as well as a couple defenses for the armbar. I rolled with Manny "Bam Bam" Lara and I actually felt I did pretty well. I was able to get a takedown, in the end though I got subbed, but I felt pretty good. I also rolled with this guy named Arthur and was able to get a submission there too. I think I'm finally breaking out of my plateau. Vance Swoboda finally showed up pretty close to 11:45AM and he and I drilled with Rob. Mark Munoz and Krzysztof Soszynski were shooting a commercial so we had to keep it down. I spoke with Krzysztof's son, Nick, about how weird is it to see your dad do commercials and he was like, "It's REALLY weird." haha Good day of training.

Today was also my free meal, which means it's one of the days I allow myself to eat meat. I was asked previously if I was a vegetarian. I'm not, at least I'm not a vegetarian everyday. I have gout, which is basically a form of arthritis that during an attack it's painful enough where having a blanket on the affected joint causes unbearable pain. The main trigger comes from animal protein, so that's why I try to limit my meat consumption. It isn't because of some morals or anything like that. It's for health reasons. I am researching other diet methods. A friend of mine mentioned the Paleo Diet, but the two times a week seems to work for me so far.

Today I ate:

A Bowl of Granola with Sliced Banana.
New York Steak and Green Beans and Broccoli from Black Angus
Yellow Tofu Curry with Brown Rice and Vegetables.

Hmmm, I'm full today, but that's only three meals. I think I messed up on the whole six smaller meals a day.

Friday, January 6, 2012

Day Five

I'm on a 4x10 schedule at work so I have every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday off unless I work Overtime. So I did two classes today, but one class wasn't a real class.

First, I did Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with Jason Manly. I hadn't done the noon Jiu-Jitsu class in forever. I was out of training for pretty much the whole month of November due to preparing for job interviews, writing papers for school, and being sick for two weeks. December was just bad in general with a combination of laziness and the holidays. Anyways, when I got there we did a warm-up and then we did a class tournament. I felt really discouraged because I was eliminated in the first round. I was pinned down and had my back mounted and I was just in bad positions. I was lucky that I wasn't submitted. After the mini-tournament, we rolled with anyone in the class and my partner that beat me in the mini-tournament I was able to get with a Gogoplata and a Triangle. Then I paired off with a guy that was clearly more advanced than I was. He was a bit of a jerk. He made fun of one of my failed submission attempts and full mounted me then stuck his finger in my face. I didn't let it show that it bothered me. The round ended and so did the class.

The second "class" was me meeting up with Manny "Bam Bam" Lara, Mike Kruse, and Adrian Gutierrez to do Krzysztof Soszynski's conditioning curriculum. It involved circuit training rounds that include:

Round 1
Get Ups Off the Wall (Not sure what it's called but you hold onto a type of bag.)
Kettlebell Swings (30 lbs.)
Medicine Ball Slams (30 lbs.)
Sledgehammers Against a Tractor Tire
Self-Propelled Treadmill
Ropes

Round 2
Turkish Get Ups
Plate Presses (Again, not sure on the official name)
Self-Propelled Treadmill
Ropes
Kettlebell Swings (30 lbs.)
Power Kicks Against a Heavy Bag

We did 30 seconds at each station and I did two rounds of each. My shirt was drenched in sweat, but I still did some ab exercises as well.

I ate:

Granola with some sliced bananas and Almond Milk
Builder's Bar (Mint Chocolate)
Spaghetti Squash with "Meat" Sauce
Asian-Marinated Tofu with Bok Choy and Brown Rice
Subway Veggie Patty Sandwich

Day Four

Work was pretty boring, I mean I got stuff done, but boring for the most part. I went to Panera and did the You Pick Two deal and got a Tomato Mozarella Panini and Broccoli Cheddar Soup right before training. I did:

Cardio Kickboxing with Raja Shippen
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with Rob Najar

I only did two classes because while I was rolling I got caught in a triangle armbar, but didn't see the armbar. I ended up feeling a pop in my elbow and felt it best to just relax for the rest of the night. I'll be back at it training hard tomorrow though.

Today I ate:

Egg White Pancake. A modified version of Krzysztof Soszynski's Egg White Pancake which consists of three egg whites, oatmeal, an apple, cinnamon, flax seed, and I add a tiny bit of organic agave to sweeten it.

An Apple and Banana and Builder's Bar.

Spaghetti Squash with a "Meat" Sauce

Tomato Mozzarella Panini and Broccoli Cheddar Soup

Now that I look at it, my meals weren't so great today. Too much cheese and too much sugar. I'll keep that in mind for tomorrow.

As I was watching some more inspiration videos I came across this one by Baltimore Ravens' Linebacker Ray Lewis. Say what you will about the man, but his words in this video were pretty motivating.

Day Three

I woke up at 4AM this morning, and I did some homework. I ate, I went to work, and I planned on training. Unfortunately my stomach wasn't feeling too great and the last thing I wanted to do was throw up on the mat. So I decided to stay home, work on some more homework and hit up the fitness center to lift some weights.

My fitness center is tiny, about the size of my living room. It's equipped with a treadmill, an elliptical, a stationary bike, and an all in one resistance machine. It doesn't have the standard weight measurements, instead it's labeled with levels. Like 1, 2, 3, etc. I also brought my dumbell, it weighs 35 lbs. which is all I need for now.

I'm doing what Men's Fitness calls The Spartacus Workout. It's inspired by the show Spartacus on Starz.

So I started out with 60 seconds with a goblet squat, then mountain climber, then single-arm dumbbell swing, then t-push up, then split jump, then dumbbell row, dumbell side lunge and touch, pushup position row, dumbbell lunge and rotation, dumbbell push press. After two circuits of that I ended up puking. I wanted to go for three sets though, and I was able to finish.

I got the workout idea from The Men's Health Big Book of Exercises. With a previous subscription it cost me 10 bucks and it has a lot of good information. The only problem is that you can pretty much find most of the workouts online for free.

This is what I ate today:

Two Tofurkey Sandwiches on Sandwich Thins, Oatmeal, Fresh Blueberries and Blackberries, with a little bit of Almond Milk and Organic Agave.

A Honeycrisp Apple with Raw Almonds

Yellow Tofu Curry with Vegetables and Brown Rice

Builder's Bar Cookies and Cream

Bean and Cheese Burrito

2 Scoops of BSN Snytha-6

The Elevation Training Band, placebo or not is actually helping me feel a lot more energy throughout the day. A few more days and I'm going to take it off and try to compare the difference.

Day Two

Today I overslept big time. I missed two hours of work and dealt with a bunch of stressed situations involving forgetting my password, then resetting my password, then forgetting it again, then resetting it again, an error occurring and then having to get that error corrected, it was a fun day where I could have easily stayed home and played video games. Instead I drove straight to Reign. Today I did three classes:

Cardio Kickboxing with Manny "Bam Bam" Lara
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with Rob Najar
Mixed Martial Arts with Jake Ellenberger

After Cardio Kickboxing, I was exhausted and barely finished the BJJ warm-up. I had a scare when my BJJ partner got a kimura in, I tried to fight out of it, but he had it in too tight and tweaked it a little. It's fine though, just got a little scared. In MMA, there was a lot of clinch work, some of which I felt would translate well in a grappling tournament. I'm exhausted and still hungry after eating my dinner. This brings me to what I ate.

Breakfast: Honeycrisp Apple
Snack: Trail Mix
Lunch: Spaghetti Squash with Meatless "Meat" Sauce
Snack: Builder's Bar
Dinner: Asian Marinated Tofu with Bok Choy
Snack: 2 Scoops of BSN Syntha-6

As for inspiration, this speech has been floating around the internet for a while, but honestly it helped me push through those three classes today. How Bad Do You Want It?

Yesterday I weighed 211.5.

This morning I weighed 206.8.
After training I weighed 208.0.

I weigh myself in the morning because I figure that's the weight I will be at when I weigh in or do the actual weight cut. I weigh myself after training to get an idea of a truer weight.

Day One

It's January 2nd and all I did was grocery shop and cook my meals for the week. I also put my Elevation Training Band on. At first I didn't feel any different with the training band on, but I noticed while I was cooking that I felt less tired than normal. Anyways my menu for the week include:

Breakfast
Steel Cut Oatmeal with Egg Whites, Fruits.
Granola with Fruits
Protein Smoothie (1 Scoop BSN Syntha-6 Vanilla Flavor, Banana, Berries, Oatmeal, and Almond Milk)
Herb Omelet

Snacks
Apples with Almonds
Samosa Potatoes
Potato Latkes
Protein Bars (Builder's Bar)
Protein Shake (BSN Syntha-6 Vanilla 2 Scoops)

Lunch/Dinner
Asian Marinated Tofu with Ginger Bok Choy with Crispy Shallots and Brown Rice
Tofurkey Sandwiches
Yellow Tofu Curry and Brown Rice
Spaghetti Squash Pasta with Meatless Ground Pasta Sauce
Bean and Cheese Burrito

I start my three a days tomorrow, possibly four. I plan to wake up at 4 tomorrow morning to get some weight-lifting in at my apartment's fitness center. I'm looking for a cheap place that I can go to early in the morning, but every place I find is too expensive.

First Post

My name is Jay Roman, I'm 27 years old, and I train at Reign Training Center. My goal is to compete at the Grappling X tournament on March 2012 at the 170 lbs. division and win gold. I currently weigh 211.5. Here I will record my progress towards my goal including a record of my training, how I'm feeling, a food log, any products I'm using as well as a review, and the occasional motivational video. Basically anything related to my training, I'll put here.
